Transrathral resistance of the prostate (TURP) is a surgery used for urinary problems caused by prostate cancer and enlarged prostate. This type of surgery is generally considered an option for men with early stage prostate cancer and is for moderate to severe urinary problems who do not respond to medication. Traditionally, TURP is considered the most effective treatment for an enlarged prostate and prostate cancer.
TURP helps reduce urinary-related "symptoms" caused by urinary hyperplasia (BPH):
Frequent urination (especially at night) or difficulty in urination
Stop while urinating and start again
Feeling that you are not emptying your bladder completely
urinary tract infections
This surgery is also performed to treat or prevent complications due to blocked urine flow, such as:
- Recurrent urinary tract infection
- Kidney or bladder damage
- Inability to control urine or inability to urinate
- Bladder stones
- Presence of blood in your urine

Treatment
Before surgery, your doctor may advise you to avoid taking medications that increase your risk of bleeding, including non-prescription painkillers, along with your bleeding medications.
Treatment of TURP takes less time, usually ninety minutes maximum. Before surgery you will be given either general anesthesia (you will faint during the procedure) or spinal anesthesia (you will be alert). You may also be given a dose of antibiotics to prevent infection. During the procedure, the rectoscope is inserted into the tip of your penis and spreads through your urethra and into the prostate area. Resectoscope is used to trim the tissue from inside your prostate gland that is used as one small piece at a time. As soon as small pieces of tissue are cut from inside your prostate, your bladder burns. They are removed at the end of the operation. After the procedure, you may have to stay in the hospital for a few days.
There may be an inflammation that blocks the flow of urine. Therefore, a urinary catheter is placed. The catheter is usually left for at least twenty-four to forty-eight hours. Once the inflammation subsides, you will not need any assistance to urinate. Most men experience significantly stronger urinary flow within a few days as a result of TURP. Follow-up treatment is sometimes necessary to reduce symptoms, especially after years of passing.
